The disk electrode is concentric with the rotating axis perpendicular to it and has good axial symmetry. The insulating layer around the disk is relatively thick and the edge effect of fluid dynamics can be ignored. Meanwhile, the roughness of electrode surface is much smaller than the thickness of dry diffusion layer.

The mechanism of some complex electrode reactions can be detected and more information about electrode process can be obtained by using the rotating ring disk electrode, which can be used to detect the existence and production of electrode reaction products, especially the intermediate products, or the stability of the disk electrode reaction products captured on the ring electrode. Therefore, it is a common test method in modern electrochemical measurement.
